What Type Of Ant Is Invading Your Home?

Home & Garden Blog

Before you can get rid of the ants in your home, it helps to know what kind you are dealing with. There are a few varieties that tend to pose the greatest problems.

House Ants

Black ants, pavement ants, and pharaoh ants are just a few types of ants that are called house ants or kitchen ants. They may be black or brown, depending on the species, and they tend to be small. You will likely find them in your kitchen, inside the pantry, or around the pet food bowls. Extermination and exclusion tactics such as keeping food inaccessible can help solve the problem.

Odorous Ants

Odorous ants mainly only smell when crushed, and the smell isn't pleasant. These ants are a type of house ant, but they differ in the fact that they can leave a bad fragrance in your home. Odorous ants are small and tend to walk in meandering queues. You will likely find them in your kitchen or another area with an easy food source. The ants may set up colonies indoors, but often their main nest is outdoors. After extermination, a perimeter treatment of the home will keep them from coming back.

Carpenter Ants

One of the most alarming ants to find in your house is a carpenter ant. These ants carve out huge galleries inside of wood, so they can destroy the main structure of your home if ignored. Carpenter ants are winged with long bodies. You may see the actual ants, or you may find the small piles of wood dust they push out of their galleries. Extermination may be invasive if the ants are nesting in the walls, but it is necessary to prevent home damage.

Fire Ants

Usually, ants living in the yard aren't anything to be concerned about, but fire ants are the exception. It's not very often that they come inside the home, but they are a huge outdoor nuisance. They will attack with painful, burning bites if disturbed, which makes them a problem if you have children or pets or spend a lot of time in your yard. Your exterminator must locate their nests and destroy them at the source.

Flying Ants

Flying ants is a bit of a misnomer, as there is no single type of flying ant. Many different ant species have members that will sprout wings during the mating period. They then set out to find a new location to create either a new colony or a satellite of the main colony. This is one way you can end up with a colony that lives in both your yard and inside your home. If you spot flying ants in or near your house, then you may be in the early stages of a new ant invasion.
